A fundraising auction for leading Australian wine writer Philip White, who is having treatment for cancer at Flinders Medical Centre, will be held from 22 to 29 January 2019.
The auction is being facilitated by Langton’s and winemakers are invited to donate wine.
“We hope to raise funds to make this period a little smoother for Philip,” spokesman for the organisers Milton Wordley said.
“All proceeds will be going towards Whitey’s medical and associated expenses.
“We would love your support in the form of donations of wine.”
Please deliver your wine to:
P. White Charity Auction
C/O Yangarra Estate Vineyard
809 McLaren Flat Road
Kangarilla SA 5157
Wine needs to be delivered by Friday 21 December. Langton’s have requested full six-packs or dozens only with the exception of collector bottles or magnums. The wine needs to be labelled clearly.
Donations should not be sent to Langton’s. The wine will be forwarded to Langton’s as one shipment.
One of Australia’s most respected wine critics, Philip publishes the popular wine blog Drinkster
“There’s wine writing and there’s Whitey,” Nick Ryan says. “Wine writing is far too prosaic a term for what Whitey does. He raises the ghosts that lurk in wines, he divines their spirits. He nibbles their ears and punches their kidneys. He sees them in ways we wish our narrower minds could. Like Cardus on cricket and Bangs on rock ‘n’ roll, Whitey is the writer a subject so beguiling and beautiful deserves.
“Whitey’s ridden it hard and he’s ridden it fast. He’s leaned a little too heavy into a few of the corners. And now he’s got the wobbles up. It’s a particularly perverse cancer that chooses to co-habitat with him, one that clearly seeks compelling company.
“It’s going to be a prick of a thing to beat and Whitey needs all the help he can get. It’s Australian wine’s great fortune that it’s had Whitey’s pen chart its progress. It’s time we gave a little of that back.”
Max Allen said, “Phillip White is the best wine writer in Australia. Whether he’s whittling the essence of a wine into a few evocative words, crankily castigating the complacent, or dragging visceral memories of his technicolour life kicking and growling into the present, he can wield the language with more skill and dazzling invention than the rest of us hacks put together.”
The auction will be unreserved, and there will be no vendor commission. The buyer’s premium and all hammer proceeds collected by Langton’s will go toward assisting Philip.
