The inaugural launch of Barossa’s Super 100 Classification took place at a gala reception in Shanghai yesterday at the St Regis Hotel.
The Barossa Super 100 list of wines is the first regional classification that highlights renowned Barossa wines selling for $100 and above.
The Classification has brought together some of the most sought-after wines from Barossa celebrating a diverse range of distinguished vineyard sites, rare old vines, generational grapegrowing families and a commitment to excellence on behalf of the wineries.
With over 100 wines featured in the Classification the list represents the depth of collectable wines of distinction being made in Australia’s most famous wine region.
The reception featured a tasting of 11 wines represented on the list to an audience supported by the South Australian Government’s South Australian Club.
Barossa Grape & Wine Association (BGWA) chief executive James March said, “We are thrilled to be presenting this list of esteemed wines from Barossa in our most valuable export market.
“The Classification is not an exhaustive list of every wine made in Barossa but represents an opportunity for consumers to navigate towards some of our most valuable and expensive wines.
“Famous wine brands such as Penfolds, Henschke and Torbreck are well represented on the list. However, it is also a place where wine enthusiasts can discover some other emerging wine brands that are quickly garnering international attention. Names such as Soul Growers, Z Wine and The Standish Wine Company are just three examples of this emerging trend.
“As far as we are aware no other region from Australia could present such a depth of wines in this price category, making this a standout opportunity to follow some of the most compelling wines from Australia.”
The price is set by the winery and criteria established by BGWA provides rigour and integrity to ensuring other third-party criteria such as featuring on the Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine or James Halliday reviews.
Consumers and trade can follow the list through a range of collateral including a Barossa Super 100 logo, posters and a dedicated web page and links to the Barossa WeChat account.
“The first person that is able to share their personal drinking story of sampling every wine on this Classification will represent a very dedicated Barossa wine enthusiast,” Mr March said.
“We look forward to celebrating such an achievement with Barossa wine lovers.”
