St Hugo wins five trophies at 2019 Limestone Coast Wine Show

By Sunday 27 October 2019No Comments

St Hugo won five trophies at the 2019 Limestone Coast Wine Show including the top award: the Bill Redman Trophy for Best Wine of Show for the 2016 St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.

Up against 496 regional competitors, the wine also won the David Wynn Trophy for Best Red Wine of Show and the HR (Ron) Haselgrove Trophy for Best Cabernet Sauvignon.

Chief of judges Samantha Connew described the wine as “a beautiful example of a wine from a terrific variety which highlights exactly what Cabernet from this region should be about.”

St Hugo was also awarded the Best Individual Vineyard Wine Trophy and the Arthur Hoffman Trophy for Viticulturist of Best Wine of Show. The latter recognises St Hugo viticulturist Tim McCarthy for the immense part he played in growing exceptional quality grapes in Coonawarra.

Tim McCarthy said, “This really belongs to all the people actually in the vineyard doing the hard work, tending the vines so diligently in order achieve this great result.”

St Hugo chief winemaker Peter Munro said, “The way the Limestone Coast show acknowledges the viticulturists behind the wines is exactly how it should be. Great wine is made in the vineyard and rarely by one person alone.  It takes a team of people on the ground, working with a clear vision about what we are trying to accomplish.

“With St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, every year we aspire to create a wine that is true to the St Hugo interpretation of Coonawarra Cabernet – a balance of power and elegance.”

“The 2016 St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon has a lovely openness, with delightful violet floral notes, fresh red fruit characters and classic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon structure. Another great vintage for St Hugo. 2016 is the 37th vintage of St Hugo, of which 17 vintages have won trophies.

“By chance, the sixth year of every decade seems to shine in Coonawarra, with St Hugo achieving multiple trophies for 1986, 1996, 2006 and now 2016 vintages.”
